What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. It occurs when nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra become damaged or die, leading to reduced levels of dopamine — a chemical messenger essential for smooth, coordinated movement.

It typically develops gradually, often starting with subtle symptoms that worsen over time. While it most commonly affects people over 60, younger-onset Parkinson’s can occur as well.

Common Symptoms

Motor symptoms:

  • Tremor: Often starts in one hand, especially at rest
  • Bradykinesia: Slowness of movement, making everyday tasks take longer
  • Rigidity: Stiffness or resistance in the arms, legs, or trunk
  • Postural instability: Balance problems, particularly in later stages
  • Smaller handwriting, reduced facial expression, and a shuffling walk

Non-motor symptoms:

  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Constipation
  • Mood changes, including depression or anxiety
  • Cognitive changes in later stages
  • Fatigue

Non-motor symptoms can appear years before movement problems become noticeable.

What Causes Parkinson’s Disease?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but it’s believed to involve acombination of:

  • Genetic factors (a family history increases risk in some cases)
  • Environmental exposures (such as certain toxins)
  • Age, with risk increasing significantly after 60
  • Abnormal clumping of a protein called alpha-synuclein in brain cells

Parkinson’s is not caused by anything a person did or didn’t do, and it isn’t contagious.

How Is It Diagnosed?

There’s no single definitive test for Parkinson’s. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on:

  • Medical history and symptom review
  • Neurological examination
  • Response to Parkinson’s medications
  • Imaging tests, sometimes used to rule out other conditions

Managing Parkinson’s Disease

While there is currently no cure, a range of treatments can help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life:

  • Medications: Such as levodopa, which help replenish dopamine levels
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy: To support movement, daily function, and communication
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help with mobility, balance, and mood
  • Surgical options: Such as deep brain stimulation, for select patients with advanced symptoms not fully controlled by medication
  • Ongoing care: Regular follow-up with a neurologist to adjust treatment as the condition evolves
