What Is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune condition affecting the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system). In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin — the protective covering around nerve fibers — disrupting the normal flow of electrical signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
Over time, this damage can also affect the underlying nerve fibers themselves. MS most commonly affects young adults, typically diagnosed between ages 20 and 40, and is more common in women.
Types of MS

- Sensitivity to heat, which can temporarily worsen symptoms
What Causes MS?
The exact cause isn’t fully known, but MS is believed to result from a combination of:
- Immune system dysfunction
- Genetic susceptibility
- Environmental factors, such as low vitamin D or certain viral infections (including Epstein-Barr virus)
- Geography, with higher rates in regions farther from the equator
MS is not contagious and is not directly inherited, though having afamily member with MS slightly increases risk.
How Is MS Diagnosed?
There’s no single test for MS. Diagnosis typically involves:
- Detailed neurological examination
- MRI scans to detect characteristic lesions in the brain and spinal cord
- Evoked potential tests to assess nerve signal speed
- Spinal fluid analysis in some cases
- Ruling out other conditions with similar symptoms

While there’s currently no cure, a range of treatments can help manage the disease and its symptoms:
- Disease-modifying therapies: Medications that can reduce relapse frequency and slow disease progression
- Relapse management: Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation during flare-ups
